What is SIL3?

Safety Integrity Level 3: Highest Safety for Process Plants

SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level 3) is a very high level of functional safety, defined by the international standard IEC 61508 (or the process-specific IEC 61511). It quantifies the probability that a safety-related system will correctly perform its required function on demand to prevent or mitigate a dangerous event. SIL3 is used for applications with the highest hazard potential, such as in chemical plants, power plants, or for emergency shutdown systems, where a failure could have severe consequences.
